Art’s Southern Style Smokehouse BBQ

***** (5 stars)

Wow, the St. Louis ribs are amazing. I’ve regarded 4 Rivers as the gold standard for barbecue, and their brisket and burnt ends are better than Art’s brisket, but these St. Louis ribs are the best barbecue I’ve found in central florida. They’re very smoky, yet moist and tender, but with a bit of a glaze on the top side, then covered with just the right amount of a perfectly seasoned slightly sweet barbecue sauce.

Art’s doesn’t mess around with multiple bottles of sauce on the table, which at first concerned me, but to my palate the have the perfect sauce already on everything when it comes from the kitchen, and the perfect amount, so it doesn’t matter.

Baked beans were a bit watery but tasty. Coleslaw was crisp and refreshing. My new favorite barbecue spot.

Artisans Table

***** (5 stars)

This is a great spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and it changes character a bit throughout the day, going from counter ordering to full table service depending upon whether it’s a weekday lunch or a more relaxed evening or weekend meal time. The sandwiches are very creative, not your run of the mill usual fare. I loved the chicken sandwich that included a large slab of chicken breast lightly fried and a delicious dill pickle and mayo sauce. The Korean-influenced cheesesteak was also good, and the fries and side salad that accompanied lunch were delicious. Service is friendly and efficient, and the cocktails and coffees are also excellent. A great addition to Pine Street.

Cress Restaurant

***** (5 stars)

This is one of the greatest restaurants in Central Florida. The chef, a multiple James Beard nominee, combines various ethnic influences to create an imaginative array of tastes. Our favorites were the fish tacos, vegetarian plate and the curry. The vegetarian plate alone had a half dozen delightfully inventive items.

The ambience is both trendy and romantic, and service is extremely professional. Best of all, the prices are extremely low for the quality on offer. Many of the small plates are under $10 and servings sizes are generous. There is also a well thought out wine list.

Chili’s

*** (3 stars)

I’m not sure why I’m writing a review of Chili’s since probably everyone has been there, but this particular location near the entrance to Champion’s Gate seemed very well managed. Even though it was packed for lunch on Sunday, service was prompt and the food was exactly as expected, which is to say fresh fried and loaded with several thousand calories. The table top ordering devices didn’t seem to get much use for ordering, but were handy for paying. Service was friendly and efficient.

Scratch

***** (5 stars)

Amazing food and service in an intimate environment. The menu changes constantly, so it’s a fun surprise to see what they have. We were there for a private party, and they knocked it out of the park with one dish after another. The rib eye with bone marrow was the best beef dish I ever tasted. It’s nice that they’re open until 2am most nights, because with only 40 seats going early or late is the only way to get in.

California Grill

*** (3 stars)

It’s difficult to do a fine dining restaurant in a theme park environment, and it’s not entirely the establishment’s fault. You’ve got people dressed as tourists, and their kids are exhausted from spending the day in a theme park. And did I mention the kids? There are lots of them.

Still, it’s possible. Victoria and Alberts is one of the greatest restaurants in the country, but they don’t allow kids. They turn the lights down, have a dress code, and charge enough that the patrons are likely to be foodies.

California Grill doesn’t use these tactics, and so the results are somewhat less spectacular. The setting on top of the Contemporary is dramatic, but bright lighting turns the windows into mirrors. The menu is fairly similar to Seasons 52 (which, let’s face it, stole the whole concept from California Grill), but the prices are obviously higher. The real difference, though, is the theme park production line approach to service, which just doesn’t work in a fine dining restaurant.

There’s really nothing wrong with the California Grill. If you’re staying on the Disney property — especially if you’re staying on the monorail loop — it’s a great choice. And if you time your visit to the nightly fireworks at the Magic Kingdom, there’s no better view.

It’s just that if you’re off-property there are better fine dining choices in Orlando. Or splurge, and go to Victoria and Albert’s.

The Crooked Spoon Gastropub

**** (4 stars)

I’d been wanting to try the Crooked Spoon for some time after hearing about their burger back when it was a food truck. So it was with great anticipation that I read the online menu and then ventured out for lunch. Upon arrival I was quite disappointed to discover that, by bad luck, I’d chosen the day they decided to inaugurate a new Sunday brunch (not noted on the website), and wouldn’t serve items from the regular menu.

Since I’m not a brunch fan, this was unfortunate. The brunch menu contains much less interesting food than their normal offerings. It was hard to understand why at least some of the regular food couldn’t be made available, but we ended up with a 420 burger and a spinach salad, two of the few non-breakfast items. Both were very good. I particularly liked the toasted brioche bun on the burger.

Bruch seemed popular with large families with many kids, which wasn’t exactly the gastropub ambience I was expecting, but good for them, if they’ve found a way to increase business on what might otherwise be a slow day. However it took close to 45 minutes to get a hamburger, which suggests they either had more business than expected, or need more organization. Perhaps the newness of the menu slowed things down, but frankly there weren’t many people still ordering at 2pm on a Sunday when we arrived.

I would like to return when the normal menu is being served, and give them a try on true gastro pub food.

Élevage

*** (3 stars)

The first key to enjoying Elevage is to put all thoughts of Bern’s out of your mind. There is absolutely no relationship between the ambiance, service, food and especially the wines. Only the ownership.

Elevage is bright and hard surfaced, so go if you want to see your date, but not hear him or her.

The service is well-intentioned and friendly, but there isn’t a deep knowledge of the preparations, and expect long pauses during your meal.

The food is… interesting. We tried:

The tea sandwiches, which were pretty bland, as tea sandwiches tend to be, I suppose.

Country ham, a flavorful hors d’oeuvre, served on a tiny biscuit.

Welsh Rarebit, kind of a mushy mess, nothing like a traditional preparation, although the fried duck egg was tasty.

Fish and chips, which has nothing to do with fish and chips. It was lightly seared tuna slices, potato chips and fried pickles, with a vinegar foam. Interesting components, but they didn’t particularly work together.

Spiced lamb flatbread. I couldn’t have identified the brown paste coating this crispy flatbread as spiced lamb, but it was pungent and tasty.

Cedar plank salmon was one of the more conventional dishes, with a sweet, tasty glaze. The accompanying Brussels sprouts were excellent.

The most successful entree was My Sunday Supper, which turned out to be boneless pork ribs with a piquant, tangy BBQ sauce, accompanied by white beans and mashed potatoes.

The very buttery mashed potatoes are also available ala carte.

The banana tart was actually more like a creme brulee, with nicely caramelized banana slices.

As you might guess, the food isn’t particularly descriptively named, which turns out to be more confusing than fun, since the descriptions aren’t always that helpful either.

But the big disappointment is the wine list. If they’re planning on drawing upon the Berns overflow clientele, this is a huge problem. The limited list is entirely yesterday’s vintages of middle brow wines. And even then, it’s limited. For example the sole American chardonnay is Far Niente at $17 a glass. There are a couple of good deals, such as Crozes Hermitage at $47 a bottle, but for the most part the list is uninteresting, and certainly disappointing to anyone longing for one of those million bottles across the street!

The bottom line is that if I couldn’t get into Berns, I probably wouldn’t go across the street, but would check out some of the many other restaurants in the area, in hopes of finding dishes that were greater than the sum of their parts, and wines that were simply, well, greater.

Vibrato Grill Jazz

***** (5 stars)

This is my favorite spot in Los Angeles, and I have hundreds of candidates for that list. I like to go around 6:30 because the opening act is great dining music. It’s usually piano and bass. The place has amazing acoustics, and you can hear every note perfectly, yet still have a dinner conversation in a normal voice.

And what food! Anything beef is great, but I like the tuna tartare, salads, and enjoy the lamb lollipop appetizer as an entree.

Great wine list–although somewhat pricey, there are a few gems. Check out the Opaque Petite Verdot if you like big, chewy monsters.

Bouchon

***** (5 stars)

What a cozy and cute place. The outside dining, where you’re almost engulfed by a tree, is very romantic, and the inside is a quant and charming bistro. Service is friendly and professional. The standout dish when we visited was the scallop trio, a special with three very different preparations. The winelist offers hundreds of selections, almost all local wineries. Wine recommendations were spot on.
