HelloFresh

***** (5 stars)

During the pandemic rather than visit restaurants I subscribed to five different meal preparation kits. Here is how they compare.

Hello Fresh offers by far the most different meals each week, and has an excellent selection of vegetarian choices in addition to meat based ones. Limited customization of meals is available. I really like their recipes. Packaging is very good, with the ingredients in separate bags. Shipments always arrived with the ice packs still frozen. This is my top pick in terms of value for the variety.

Blue Apron is the first kit we tried. Limited customization of meals is available, but there is a lot of variety in the recipes. There are some good ethic selections. Packaging is very good, with the ingredients in separate bags. Shipments always arrived with the ice packs still frozen. My only nit is that sometimes condensation had soaked the instruction cards. This is an excellent choice, and a moderate price.

Home Chef offers the most flexibility in swapping ingredients. Nearly every meal allows substantial customization of the proteins, including upgrades in quality, change from beef, to chicken, to vegetarian, etc. When fish is part of a recipe it is impressive how fresh it is. We had a bento box that included raw tuna, and it was as good as at any sushi place. Instructions are clear, and the recipes are interesting and varied enough to avoid repetitiveness. They also have options you can simply heat up, although we never tried these. Packaging is very good, with the ingredients in separate bags. Shipments always arrived with the ice packs still frozen. For overall quality, this is my favorite of the five plans.

Purple Carrot is a vegan meal kit. It has the most ambitious recipes, excellent ethnic options, and a lot of variety. Because a lot of the recipes involve tofu or seitan, neither of which are my favorites, I stuck with the vegetable only recipes. I really like that instead of instruction cards each week includes a very professionally produced booklet with all of the recipes. This is the most expensive of the five plans.

Every Plate is by far the least expensive of all the meal kits. The downside is that the recipes are quite repetitive. If there are three possible proteins, three possible sauces, three possible carbs, and three possible vegetables, then there are 81 possible combinations, and you tend to see them, over and over. True, there are also some other varients, but it just seemed too mundane. Instructions tend to be very simple. Shipments always arrived with the ice packs still frozen. This is a good pick if price is your most important consideration.

Overall, my choices are:

Most Customizable – Home Chef
Best Selection plus great Vegetarian options – Hello Fresh
Cheap – Every Plate

Honolulu Fish Company

***** (5 stars)

We ordered an assortment of sashimi shipped to Orlando Florida. The package was shipped by Fedex, and although delayed one day the fish arrived ice cold and ready to eat. Kanpachi is usually my favorite, but this was just okay, perhaps because I'm still learning how to slice sashimi! But the salmon and tuna were both superb, as good as I've had from any restaurant. We'll definitely order from them again.

This is one of only two table service restaurants in the Southwest gate area. The menu is much more limited than at the far larger Cask and Larder, but I’ve never been a big fan of that place.

You can sit at a small number of tables, mostly for two, or at the bar.

The breakfast burrito at Farmair was better than anything I’ve had at Cask and Larder. We substituted bacon for sausage, and boy did they deliver! The only downside is they don’t have hot sauce, just salsa.

Service was prompt and friendly.

This is the best use of this space yet. Hopefully they will be able to fill it. Authentic curry goat, sweet plantains, and black beans. As with most fusion places, it's not really a fusion recipe, but a variety of cuisines. Friendly service.

Cheesecake Factories seem particularly consistent, and this one is no exception. Thank goodness for the Skinnylicious menu with many items at 500 calories or less, to make up for that 1600 calorie slice of cheesecake with almost three day’s worth of fat.

The potstickers and samosas were particularly good appetizers, and the Asian Chicken Salad is a very large, low-calorie alternative.

Note that it’s much easier to get to this location via Palm Parkway than from International Drive and all the congestion around the factory outlets.

Remarkably good sports bar food (albeit expensive) for a tourist location. Excellent burgers, wood grilled wings, wood grilled oysters.

Extensive game room with redemption games, and thankfully completely separate from the dining area. Plenty of screens for every game.

Cracker Country is my favorite part of the Florida State Fair. It's more like visiting a historic area, such as Colonial Williamsburg, where characters in period costumes introduce you to the traditional way of doing things. Very different from the rest of the fair experience!

Sakura Asian Fusion

***** (5 stars)

I tend to suspect a restaurant in the heart of a tacky tourist district can't be good, but Sakura is the exception. It bills itself as Asian Fusion, but there is really not fusion going on, it's simply a collection of Asian foods from many countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, and China.

The sushi selections are extensive and appear fresh, but I concentrated on the Vietnamese items, and they were among the best I've had, including many of the restaurants in Orlando's Vietnamese district.

The summer rolls are delightfully fresh and cold, and sever with a tasty
peanut and chili sauce.

The Bun Saigon is a classic Veitnamese vermicelli bowl with loads of basil, grilled pork, and fresh veggies, and served with a bowl of fish sauce. Ask for Sriracha and Hoisin to elevate it to sublime. My server also gave me the tip to add my leftover peanut sauce from the summer rolls, and that was indeed a great idea!

The interior decor is pleasant, with a variety of Asian decor. Service was very friendly and efficient.

This charming little place in an unlikely location does a great job with Puerto Rican food.

Of particular note is the Q'Keenan Paticon. It's essentially a sandwich made with plantains instead of bread. You have your choice of sweet or green plantains, and beef or chicken filling. I chose sweet plantains and shredded beef, and the combination was sublime, especially with the provided garlic and hot sauces.

Also a shoutout to the caramel cappuccino, which was made without sugar by default, so as not to be overly sweet.

Service was very friendly.

Excellent curries are the highlight here, served in generous portions. If you've had Caribbean curries before then you know to watch for bones, as the meat is cleavered, so if you're new to it, be alert, as this applies to not just the goat but also the chicken.

I prefer a drier jerk style, done over flames, rather than the wetter style done here, so my choice here is one of the curries.
